Service Saturdays

Alternative Breaks will continue monthly service days with non-profit organizations within the Grand Rapids community. Service Saturdays are one-day volunteer opportunities for GVSU students. Volunteers will travel in groups to a site located in the Grand Rapids area. Trips are free to participate but volunteers are expected to pack their own lunch. Upcoming service projects will be announced a month in advance.

Family LIFE Center

April 20, 2013 ~ 10:00a-4:00p ~ Kirkhof Center, Lobby Shop

For the final Service Saturday of winter semester Alternative Breaks is working with Family LIFE Center and helping the non-profit with outdoor and indoor spring cleaning, . We will be meeting in Kirkhof across for Java City/the Lobby Shop at 10:00AM and we will be leaving at 10:15AM. If you are not there by that time we will leave without you. Plan on us being back to Grand Valley by 4:00PM. As always, remember to bring a lunch, snacks, and a water bottle. Get ready for a great day of service!

Humane Society

February 16, 2013 ~ 11:15a-4:00p ~ Kirkhof Center, Lobby Shop

Hey guys! It’s time to sign up for Service Saturday again. This month we will be working with the Humane Society from 12:00PM-4:00PM. We will be meeting in Kirkhof across for Java City/the Lobby Shop at 11:15AM and we will be leaving at 11:30AM. If you are not there by that time we will leave without you. Plan on us being back to Grand Valley by 4:30PM. At the site we will be assisting them with laundry, windows, sweeping, mopping and other little projects around the facility. And as always, make sure you bring a water bottle!

Rays of Hope for Haiti

For the month of January, Alternative Breaks is working with Rays of Hope for Haiti, a non-profit who collects medical supplies and sends them to help rebuild Haiti. We will be meeting in Kirkhof across for Java City/the Lobby Shop at 9:45AM and we will be leaving at 10:00AM. If you are not there by that time we will leave without you. Plan on us being back to Grand Valley by 4:00PM. As always, remember to bring a lunch, snacks, and a water bottle. Also we will be working in a warehouse with no heat so dress appropriately. Get ready for a great day of service!

Comprenew
December 8, 2012 ~ 10:00a-3:00p ~ Kirkhof Center, Lobby Shop

The Service Saturday for December 2012 will be working with Comprenew. Comprenew is a Grand Rapids based electronics recycling organization. Last year alone, they kept 3 million pounds of tech waste out of landfills. Have fun releasing finals stress by disassembling computers. Meet at 10:00 in in front of the Lobby Shop in Kirkhof to arrange drivers and fill out forms. Bring a water bottle. Alternative Pathways

The Second Service Saturday of 2012 will be working with Alternative Pathways. Alternative Pathways is a non-profit service provider located in Grand Rapids, Michigan where the members of Alternative Pathways have various types of disabilities, and live independently. Meet at 9:30 in in front of the Lobby Shop in Kirkhof to arrange drivers and fill out forms. Bring a water bottle, but lunch will be provided. Land Conservancy of West Michigan
February 25, 2012 ~ 9:15a-3:00p ~ Kirkhof Center, Lobby Shop
Alternative Breaks’ first Service Saturday of 2012 will be held at the Land Conservancy of West Michigan. Volunteers will be working at the Lamberton Lake preserve, helping prepare for a restoration project slated to begin this spring. Volunteers will be removing invasive buckthorn, clearing the property of brush and debris, and installing monitoring wells as time allows. Volunteers will meet in front of the Lobby Shop in Kirkhof Center at 9:15a and carpool to the site. Please pack a lunch and a reusable water bottle! Comprenew

Alternative Breaks’ last Service Saturday for 2011 will be held at Comprenew. Volunteers will be dismantling and disassembling electronic waste (mostly computers) into individual parts to prevent them from ending up in landfill. It’s a great way to hang out with friendly people, gain some service hours, and take out your aggression on inanimate objects! We will meet in front of the Kirkhof Center Lobby Shop, carpool to the site, and volunteer until around 4:00pm. Service will be indoors, and don’t forget to pack a lunch and a reusable water bottle!

Alternative Breaks’ November Service Saturday will be with Mel Trotter Ministries in Downtown Grand Rapids. Mel Trotter Ministries provides shelter, food, clothing, and other resources to community members in need.
